Telling the stories of Kansas State University since 1909

Jenna Wykes

Jenna Wykes, graduate student in counseling and student development, wants to work in academic services for college student athletes. And motivating student athletes to work hard in their academics can be challenging. But she already knows about that. As a former student-athlete and a wife to a current football player, Wykes does not accept any excuses.

“A lot of times, they’ll say, ‘Well, you know it’s hard practicing and doing this and that and then doing academics,’ and I can say, ‘Well, I’ve been there, and if I can do it you can do it,’” she said.

Shon Price

Balancing work and school is stressful for a lot of students. But for Shon Price, junior in sociology, the stress is worth it. He is not only a bouncer at a bar in Aggieville, Ale House; he is also a volunteer firefighter for Riley County. Price said he got started in the field of firefighting when his mother jokingly suggested becoming a firefighter. After that, he researched the profession and began a series of training classes to become a certified firefighter.

“Volunteer firefighting is truly the most beneficial community service that you can provide to people who would not have the same fire protection without us,” Price said.

Tony Meyer

Tony Meyer, senior in landscape architecture from St. Charles, Mo., decided to attend K-State because of the architecture program.

“I like to work on architecture because it’s different every day,” Meyer said. “You get to work on social issues. I like to work with people on how to improve their community.”

Outside of architecture Meyer plays basketball and is active in Christian Challenge Campus Ministry, where he participates in activities they put on and attends meetings every Thursday in Forum Hall.
